Building Ownership & Alignment

As part of seminar series I am taking I received this series of questions that are designed to help build ownership and alignment with individuals or groups. As part of our transition to a collaborative operating system we are all still learning. This may help in part of the process.

Building Ownership & Alignment

Using the information and questions below, practice building ownership and alignment with individuals (or a group) in either your business life, personal life, or both. Note: there is room for you to add your own additional questions.

Ownership & alignment is developed as you work with stakeholders to co-create both the “what” and the “how”. Ownership is created when the goal or vision is an extension of each individual’s goal or vision. Alignment happens as you deal with issues of misalignment such as hidden assumptions, people’s varying expectations, and resistance.

The following questions can help you create ownership and alignment:

1. What have we been asked to do (goal, task, charter, mission, plan, etc.) and what questions, concerns do we have about it?
2. What needs to be done?
3. How do you think we should approach this?
4. What outcomes are important to us?
5. What do you see as the critical success factors in this?
6. What do we want to have happen as a result?
7. What role do each of us want to play in this?
8. How do you see ______________________________________? (perhaps asking them to describe the approach, the end result, or some minute aspect of either)
9. What do you need from me/us in order to be successful?
10. What are your expectations around _________________________________? (perhaps the end result, the product design, the success of the initiative)
11. What do you mean by _____________________________________________? (For example, “superior customer service”, or “outrageous success”)
12.
13.
